A Newcastle United legend popped into a Tyneside charity based within the shadow of St James’ Park to show his support for their work.
David Ginola, who made 58 appearances for the club between 1995 and 1997, visited The People’s Kitchen during a short stay on Tyneside where he also attended a number of other organisations including the Sir Bobby Robson Foundation, the Cardiac Unit at the Freeman Hospital and Newcastle University.
Teresa Turnbull, a volunteer team leader at The People’s Kitchen welcomed him and explained how for nearly 35 years, the charity has supported the homeless and vulnerable of Newcastle with food and friendship being at the heart of the service they provide.
David discovered that the Kitchen has more than 230 unpaid volunteers and provides 11 weekly sessions adding up to 40,000 hot meals per year for those in need.
During his stay, he helped to make custard for the evening meal and took time out to pose for photographs with the delighted volunteers.
“David was really interested in our work and told us about the work of an equivalent organisation in his home town in France. We were all delighted to meet him,” said Teresa.
