National role for maritime volunteer

Jul 30, 2015

A national marine based charity has appointed a Warrington man to the position of Vice Chairman to help steer them in the right direction concerning

recruitment, finance, training and seamanship.

Former police Inspector, Chris Todd joined the Mersey (Birkenhead) Unit

of the Maritime Volunteer Service (MVS) and quickly rose through the ranks to become Area Volunteer Officer for the North of England, Scotland and Northern Ireland as well as taking on a role as Joint Chair of the Committee of Management.

The MVS is a uniformed, voluntary organisation, founded in 1994 with full charitable status with its patron being HRH Prince Michael of Kent.

The organisation has more than 30 active units spread around the UK coastline at major port & river areas, with more units planned. Mr Todd is based at the Port of Manchester Unit that is active along the west coast and the canal networks.

The aim of the MVS is to keep the country’s maritime traditions alive. Practical training in seamanship, small boat handling, engineering and communications helps to achieve this. Most units have their own vessels and the MVS is often called upon by port authorities

Mr Todd is looking forward to the challenges ahead.

“I’ve always had a keen interest in the operational aspects of the charity and now I can switch my focus to strategic matters as well as essential activities such as fund raising and relationship building.

“I’m delighted to accept this important role and I’m also keen to keep my nautical skills fresh by training with my unit. The MVS is a great charity and I’m proud to be able to serve it in whatever way I can.”

The MVS is now actively recruiting. Members should be over 18 years old and no experience is necessary, as training will be given. For more information on the MVS please see the web site http://www.mvs.org.uk for contact details
