Winner Announced for a Sketch for Sammy 2018

Nov 17, 2018

A packed audience at The Exchange in North Shields spent a Sunday afternoon laughing and giggling at some of the region’s finest comedy talent.

For the fourth year running, the team behind Sunday for Sammy hosted a competition to find a talented new comedy sketch writer with the winner receiving the coveted Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais Comedy Award 2018.

As well as seeing the six shortlisted sketches performed by South Tyneside’s Laffalang Gang, the capacity audience were treated to individual performances by Gavin Webster, Steffen Peddie, Cal Halbert, Josh Daniels and Louise Young.

Celebrity judges, actress, presenter, writer, producer Kim Tserkezie, (Balamory) comedy writer Elliott Kerrigan (Boy Meets Girl) and Chairman of the Sunday for Sammy Trust, Tim Healy deliberated over the winning sketch which may be considered for inclusion in a future Sunday for Sammy show.  The winner of the competition with his sketch entitled, “The Club Doctor” was civil servant Ian McCormick from Shiremoor. His winning sketch featured a character who qualified for free prescriptions and capitalised on that by getting medication free of charge for his friends down at the local working men’s club.  Ian said:  “The sketch was inspired by a story an old fella told me years ago about his local club – I don’t think it was true, but it stuck in my mind and was very funny. “The whole process has been fantastic from start to finish. I got some great advice from Jason Cook and saw my work performed live for the first time which was a bit surreal.  As a fan of their comedy work, getting my name on the first Clement-La Frenais award is a huge honour and a privilege. I felt a bit like I would imagine I’d feel if Newcastle won the FA Cup. Obviously, that’s never going to happen, so winning the award was probably the closest I’ll ever get to that.”

Chair of the Trustees for Sunday for Sammy, Tim Healy said,

“The standard of entries was once again very high. We all felt that Ian’s sketch had the right amount of humour and it was well written and thought out. I’m sure we all know a character like that guy down at the club.”

Sunday for Sammy are completely self-funded and it’s income from show tickets and DVD sales that allows the Trust to fund young performers. The latest DVD is now on sale from JG Windows.
